On October 14, a delegation from the V.I. Shumakov National Medical Research Center for Transplantology and Artificial Organs of the Ministry of Health of Russia visited the Nizhny Novgorod Region on a working trip, headed by the director of the institution, the chief freelance transplantologist of the Ministry of Health of Russia, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Sergey Gotye. The purpose of the trip was to assess the transplant work experience of medical institutions in Nizhny Novgorod and to determine steps to expand the relevant program in the region.
According to the government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, transplants are currently being performed in two city clinics: the Research Institute – Specialized Cardiac Surgery Clinical Hospital named after Academician B.A. Korolev, and the Privolzhsky Regional Medical Center of the FMBA of Russia. The first performs heart and major vessel transplants, the second performs kidney and liver transplants. The possibility of performing kidney transplants at the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital named after N.A. Semashko is now also being considered.
Specialists from the National Medical Research Center, accompanied by the chief physician of the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital named after N.A. Semashko, Sergey Bogdanov, conducted rounds of the departments, a consultation on complex clinical cases, and a seminar on organizational and clinical issues of kidney transplantation. After becoming acquainted with the hospital's work, a working meeting of representatives of the two institutions was held with the participation of the chief freelance transplantologist of the Ministry of Health of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Vladimir Zagaynov. It was chaired by the region's Minister of Health, Galina Mikhaylova.
“In the Nizhny Novgorod Region there are established successes in providing transplant care — this is a good foundation for development. The volume of operations performed needs to be increased, and resources for providing this assistance to Nizhny Novgorod residents must be expanded. The initiative is also supported by the regional government. Until now organ transplants have been performed here in two institutions; now it is time to open a kidney transplant program based at the Regional Hospital. Part of the team has already completed training at the Shumakov NMRC, and next week we expect several more specialists. We hope that within the next six months the institution will perform its first related-donor transplant,” commented the director of the V.I. Shumakov NMRC for Transplantology and Artificial Organs, the chief freelance transplantologist of the Ministry of Health of Russia, Sergey Gotye.
Sergey Gotye and specialists from the flagship federal transplant center held a meeting with Deputy Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Andrey Checherin. They discussed the stages of organizing the new program's work, prospects for its implementation, and the need to provide this type of high-tech medical care to the population.
“Our Semashko Regional Clinical Hospital is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year. The medical institution is the locomotive of Nizhny Novgorod healthcare, and therefore it should become the regional center for coordinating donation. We will take a systematic approach to transplantation work: we will further equip the relevant departments with specialized equipment, deepen the knowledge of leading physicians in the field of transplantology, and launch a mentoring process to pass this knowledge on to young personnel. Our overarching goal is to ensure that Nizhny Novgorod residents receive the necessary care here, in their own region. We will certainly adopt the experience of other regions of the country that have already achieved good results in this work,” said Andrey Checherin.
It should be recalled that work to increase the accessibility of high-tech medical care for the region's residents is being carried out in accordance with the goals and objectives of the national project “Longer and Active Life.”
The new national project is a continuation of the national project “Healthcare” and is being implemented at the instruction of the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin. It covers all areas of work in the sector — from modernization of primary care to rehabilitation.
