The season for harvesting forest seed material has begun in the forests of the Nizhny Novgorod Region. More than 30 tonnes of pine and spruce cones are planned to be collected in the 2025–2026 autumn–winter period. This was reported by the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife Protection of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
“Collecting cones is the beginning of a labor-intensive process of procuring material for subsequent forest restoration. Seeds are obtained from the cones of coniferous trees, which become the basis for growing seedlings. It is important to collect cones before the scales open. High-quality planting material ensures high survival rates and sustainable development of young trees, which is especially important when restoring forests after clear-cutting, fires and other damage,” noted the Minister of Forestry and Wildlife Protection of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Roman Vorobyov.
He added that the region’s forest restoration work is being carried out within the framework of the federal project “Preservation of Forests,” which is part of the new national project “Environmental Well-being.” Special attention is being paid to cone harvesting at forest seed production sites. These sites provide seeds with high hereditary qualities, which helps preserve genetic diversity and improve the characteristics of future forest stands.
During collection, medium-sized, dense and fully formed cones are selected — they yield the highest-quality seeds. Properly organized harvesting of forest seed material makes it possible to obtain seed material with high-quality characteristics, which subsequently ensures effective restoration of the region’s forest resources.
The collected cones are sent to the Semyonovsky Special Seed Forest Enterprise, where they are processed on a modern mobile cone-drying installation. The equipment provides full automation of the drying process and allows for maximum seed yield.
“This season, from 30 tonnes of cones it is planned to obtain approximately 300 kilograms of pine and spruce seeds, of which 40 kilograms will have improved hereditary properties. All seeds will be sent to nurseries for growing planting stock, which will later be used to restore the forests of the Nizhny Novgorod Region. Seeds with improved genetic characteristics allow the formation of more resilient and viable forest stands,” added the Ministry of Forestry of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
Recall that from 2025, by order of President Vladimir Putin, the national project “Environmental Well-being” came into effect in Russia, carrying out the tasks previously provided for in the national project “Ecology.” The new national project is intended to care for the environment and improve its livability for people. The national project includes six federal projects: “General Cleanup,” “Water of Russia,” “Conservation of Biological Diversity and Development of Ecotourism,” “Preservation of Forests,” “Circular Economy,” and “Clean Air.”
