Society: Rospotrebnadzor warned residents of Nizhny Novgorod about intestinal yersiniosis — an acute infectious disease of the gastrointestinal tract that causes systemic intoxication and skin rashes. In Russia intestinal yersiniosis is reported in all regions of the country, with incidence ranging from 1.5% to 15.5% of all intestinal diseases.

The main route of transmission is foodborne, and the mechanism of transmission is fecal-oral: the causative agent — Yersinia — is shed from the intestine and gets into water, soil and foodstuffs, where it survives and multiplies for prolonged periods.

The disease is transmitted from soil through small rodents — voles, rats and house mice; agricultural animals — pigs, cows, sheep and goats; less often — through domestic animals: cats and dogs. It is important to remember that infected people can also transmit the disease.

But most often a person becomes infected by consuming contaminated food. The incubation period lasts from 1 to 6 days, most commonly 2–3.

For prevention of yersiniosis, Rospotrebnadzor recommends practicing thorough personal hygiene and consuming heat‑treated foods, especially dairy, meat and fish products. Vegetables and fruits should be washed before eating; drink only boiled or bottled water.

Avoid contact with sick people, store raw and cooked foods separately in the refrigerator, and do not mix vegetables and fruits from the old and new harvests.

Regular rodent control, sealing of storage facilities and their treatment with disinfectants are also important.

Depending on the level of gastrointestinal tract involvement, symptoms of gastroenteritis (abdominal pain, nausea and bowel disturbance), enterocolitis (diarrhea, possibly even dehydration), or gastroenterocolitis predominate. If symptoms of the disease appear, you should immediately consult a doctor and not self‑medicate.
