Young doctors from Nizhny Novgorod will work in hospitals for three years after graduating from university.

      Graduates of medical universities who studied at the state's expense may be required to complete a three-year internship under the supervision of mentors. The relevant bill was adopted in the first reading by the State Duma of the Russian Federation, reports Alexey Nikonov, editor-in-chief of the news agency "Stationar-Press."

      According to the document, after graduating from university young specialists will have to conclude a contract with a specific contracting party — a region or a medical organization. For three years they will undergo training and work in state healthcare institutions.

      Refusal to participate in the program will entail financial penalties. The graduate will have to reimburse the state for the funds spent on their education and also pay an additional fine equal to that amount.

      The Russian Ministry of Health emphasizes that this is not a return to the Soviet system of forced distribution. No one will be forced to go to remote regions against their will. However, participation in the program will become a mandatory condition for those who studied at the state's expense.

      If the bill is finally approved, its provisions will come into force on March 1, 2026.

      Earlier it was reported that the medical institute in Nizhny Novgorod will be named after Academician Nikolai Blokhin. Nearly 770 Nizhny Novgorod doctors received regional incentive payments.
