To "Switzerland" without visas

      In the spring of 1903, carts moved along the Arzamas Road toward Myza station (then a dacha suburb of Nizhny Novgorod). Gymnasium boys and girls were traveling on them with their teachers. They were carrying 1,000 seedlings of 3–5-year-old pine trees. Each tree had a tag with the surname of the student who was to care for it. In a short time they turned a wasteland into a small, only 2-hectare, patch of forest.

      A little more than a hundred years have passed. Today the largest Nizhny Novgorod park, called “Switzerland,” stretches over 380 hectares. Here you can have a pleasant time with friends, be alone with nature, get away from the city's hustle and bustle, do sports, participate in a variety of leisure activities, and learn many new and interesting things.

      The participants of the guided walk through the park organized by the Center “Kamerata” on September 18 studied in detail what makes Nizhny Novgorod’s “Switzerland” notable.

      To better present the area, special tactile relief maps were prepared.

      In just an hour and a half of the tour the blind guests managed to:

      — Walk through the autumn leaves and breathe in the fresh air.

      — Encounter green sculptures and dancing fountains.

      — Learn how squirrel cafes work, a hotel for books, and a hotel for insects.

      — Demonstrate physical fitness on exercise machines, relax on swings, and take beautiful photographs.

      We also studied in detail the posters for the “Ecotorium” and the “Territory of Emotions,” the planetarium and the “Planets of Health.” So from now on we’ll be visiting “Switzerland” even more often.

      After the guided walk, a presentation of a new social project, “Optimal Route,” took place in the “Young Nizhny” pavilion. The project is being implemented with the support of the administration of Nizhny Novgorod and is aimed at people with visual impairments. Its goal is to ease orientation and mobility for blind residents of Nizhny Novgorod in the urban environment and to expand their opportunities to use the city’s renewed social infrastructure.

      Specialists from the Center “Kamerata” spoke about the project’s activities, as well as the methods and technologies used to facilitate orientation and mobility for blind people.

      After the presentation, participants were treated to an engaging quiz dedicated to the history, geography, and urban infrastructure of Nizhny Novgorod, during which it was revealed:

      — Which bridge connects Maksim Gorky Street and Alesha Peshkov Street?

      — What is the name of the shortest street in the Prioksky District?

      — Where is the church on wheels located?

      — Is it true that the founder of Nizhny Novgorod has been canonized?

      The event concluded with a discussion about which urban public spaces must be explored. It was decided to study the territory of the Strelka and the recently landscaped square in front of the Avtozavod department store in the very near future.

      We remind you that the “Optimal Route” project includes practical classes on orientation and mobility, the production of tactile graphic maps and diagrams, excursions to newly improved territories, study of public transport routes, and master classes on the non-visual use of urban digital services. The project will conclude with a final urban orientation competition where participants will visually demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have acquired.

      “In recent years Nizhny Novgorod has changed significantly; social and transport infrastructure has been renewed, and new public spaces have appeared offering broad opportunities for development and leisure. Our project will help blind residents of Nizhny Novgorod better navigate the city and take a more active part in public life,” said the head of the “Optimal Route” project, Vyacheslav Tsaregorodtsev.
