The governor of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Gleb Nikitin, held a meeting of the council of the regional branch of the Russian Military-Historical Society. The chair of the branch reviewed the results of work for the second and third quarters of 2025 with participants and discussed plans for the next year. This was reported by the regional government press service.

Gleb Nikitin said that in 2025 more than 100 events were held with about 5,000 participants. These included the international scientific-practical conference “Unity Day and the People’s Militia of 1612: new meanings, values, historical images,” the 16th All-Russian exhibition-competition of scale modeling and military-historical miniatures “Defenders of the Fatherland,” as well as public lectures, master classes and open lessons involving members of the Russian Military-Historical Society.

The regional branch published the book “Aviators,” dedicated to the labor collectives of aircraft factories of the Gorky Region, and organized a summer history school as part of the “Time of the First. The First Among the First” session at a children’s health camp in the region.

According to Gleb Nikitin, the regional branch of the Russian Military-Historical Society is a real force in preserving historical memory and patriotic education. He noted the need to expand the active membership and involve teachers, local historians, business representatives and motivated young people in the work, turning quantity into quality. Nikitin emphasized that the history of the Russian state largely rests on the conscientious labor of scholars, publicists and writers of different generations.

Members of the regional branch initiate the creation of memorial sites, participate in military-historical and patriotic events at various levels and conduct educational work with young people. Representatives of the organization meet with participants of the special military operation, pensioners and activists.

The chair of the regional branch singled out the importance of preserving the memory of Gorky-region veterans of the Great Patriotic War and Nizhny Novgorod residents who participated in the special military operation.

Gleb Nikitin reminded that the region has 425 Heroes of the Soviet Union and 51 full bearers of the Order of Glory. The memory of 314 heroes has already been commemorated with memorial plaques. Next year the work will continue: seven more memorial plaques will be installed in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast dedicated to Heroes of the Soviet Union and of Russia, participants of the Great Patriotic War and the special military operation. He stressed: “To know, honor and not consign to oblivion those who performed heroic deeds in the name of the Motherland is our sacred duty.”

Today the regional branch of the Russian Military-Historical Society includes more than 300 people. The organization is focused on educational campaigns, search-and-recovery activities and scientific projects. The region serves as a venue for major federal events. A separate area of work is support for historical territories and the exchange of experience with Donbass regions. In 2025 the Nizhny Novgorod branch donated sets of the books “Collectors of the Russian Land” to 14 school libraries in Khartsyzk, which it sponsors.

Gleb Nikitin added that the development of interregional cooperation in patriotic education, strengthening ties with the Donetsk People’s Republic and exchanging experience in youth education are among the priorities for Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.

Participants discussed the teaching of history in schools and universities as a separate agenda item. The head of the region pointed to the need for joint work to implement interactive forms of learning and reminded attendees of the “Lessons with a Journey” project, which the region has been implementing for two years. Tenth-graders from Nizhny Novgorod Oblast travel by a special train to Volgograd, where they see firsthand an important stage of the Great Patriotic War and take part in interactive history lessons en route. In return, Volgograd schoolchildren come to Nizhny Novgorod, study the history of the People’s Militia and learn how victory was forged in Gorky on the home front.

At Gleb Nikitin’s initiative in 2025 the project’s geography expanded: students who excelled in their studies and patriotic activities visited Minsk and Brest as part of a rich cultural and educational program dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Victory.

The search movement also contributes to preserving historical memory. This year the first “Search Commander School” in Russia was established in Nizhny Novgorod. In 2026 its activists plan an expedition to Novgorod Oblast with the participation of Nizhny Novgorod search units.

In 2025 the creation of municipal branches of the Russian Military-Historical Society was intensified. Three branches — in Dzerzhinsk, Arzamas and Sarov — have been operating since 2018; this year 11 more appeared, and another 13 will be organized soon. In the future branches are expected to be established in every municipality.

Gleb Nikitin said that in 2026 the regional branch will continue its educational campaigns, publishing and scientific projects, as well as memorial and historical work. A program of events is already being prepared for landmark dates: the 805th anniversary of Nizhny Novgorod, the 100th anniversary of Dzerzhinsk and the 120th anniversary of the Russian aviation industry.

Recall that on July 1 a general meeting of the regional branch of the Russian Military-Historical Society was held in Nizhny Novgorod. As a result of a general vote, the governor of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Gleb Nikitin, was officially elected chair of the branch.
