Incidents
In Nizhny Novgorod, a 70-year-old woman became the victim of fraudsters, losing a large sum of money. The pensioner turned to the police after realizing she had become part of a carefully planned scam.
According to her, unknown callers who identified themselves as employees of the military commissariat and law enforcement agencies phoned her for two weeks. The perpetrators assured the woman that some third parties were attempting to steal funds from her bank accounts.
Under the pretext of protecting the funds from the alleged impending theft, and to arrange the necessary paperwork, the callers persuaded the pensioner to withdraw 4.7 million rubles from her bank accounts. She handed the money to an unknown man in a bag right outside her home.
A week later she received another call and was persuaded to hand over a further 1.7 million rubles, this time from her personal savings. She carried out all actions following the callers' instructions. The total loss amounted to 6.4 million rubles.
A criminal case has been opened under part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation — fraud on a particularly large scale. Police officers are currently conducting an investigation and are establishing all the circumstances of the incident.
Earlier it was reported that an employee of a Nizhny Novgorod university handed over 14 million rubles to scammers.
