On October 6, a festive event dedicated to the All‑Russian Day of Pregnant Women took place at the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Center for Family Health and Reproduction. Staff of the medical institution invited local residents who are expecting to become mothers in the coming months. Some of them attend routine checkups at the facility’s women’s clinic, while others are awaiting the arrival of a baby thanks to successful treatment they previously received at the center.

“We decided to invite to our celebration women who are expecting a baby within the next two to three months. Specialists prepared educational and entertaining master classes for women from Nizhny Novgorod on many topics that are especially relevant in the first weeks of parenthood. These include, for example, questions about breastfeeding and ways to prevent burnout in new mothers and fathers. Our lawyers and social workers also gave patients mini-lectures on the legal and social aspects of support for pregnant women and families with children. Women were reminded once again of the support measures available not only at the federal level but also at the regional level. At the end of the celebration, partner organizations presented the women with useful gifts: hygiene sets for newborn care and medical cosmetic kits for the expectant mothers themselves,” said Svetlana Vaganova, chief physician of the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Center for Family Health and Reproduction.

Participants in the event shared their impressions.

“I have been under observation at the Center for Family Health and Reproduction for two years. Here, together with my husband, we were helped to resolve infertility: doctors ordered tests, then a slight correction of hormonal balance, and here it is — the long‑awaited pregnancy! In three months we will become parents to a little son. Thanks to all the doctors and midwives of this wonderful institution for their professionalism, sensitivity and attentive care for patients! Today I learned a lot of useful information about breastfeeding and baby care,” said patient Tatyana.

The head of the medical institution noted that in the past year alone the center’s medical staff helped more than a thousand families in the Nizhny Novgorod region experience the joy of parenthood.

“Our center is actively engaged in providing specialized medical care to women and men who face difficulties conceiving. At the same time, our tasks also include introducing modern methods of diagnosis and treatment of pathological pregnancy, conditions of postpartum women, and gynecological patients into regional practice. That is why we have our own women’s clinic, surgical procedure rooms, ultrasound and physiotherapy procedure rooms, and a day hospital,” added Svetlana Vaganova.

According to the chief physician, the center applies all key methods of medical and sanitary care in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. For example, the surgical rooms perform extended colposcopy, radio‑wave and cryosurgical treatment of cervical diseases, Pipelle biopsy, hysteroscopy, ultraviolet blood irradiation, and ozone therapy.

In the therapeutic unit, couples have access to testing of hormonal status and, if necessary, its correction. In the center’s own laboratory they can not only detect sexually transmitted infections but also determine the sensitivity of the identified microflora to antibacterial drugs. This is important for prescribing competent treatment.

“I would like to emphasize separately that the institution receives patients from across the region in three narrow areas: cervical pathology, problems with pregnancy loss, and treatment of women in the climacteric period,” the chief physician explained.

Equally important is the work of the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Center for Family Health and Reproduction in assisting women who find themselves in difficult life situations. Psychologists, lawyers and social workers support underage pregnant women, women in pre‑divorce situations or in conflict with their families. Specialists’ efforts are aimed at helping women who have experienced violence, widows, women with disabilities and women who have children with disabilities, single mothers with minor children, and low‑income families. Experts also provide pre‑abortion counseling.

Annually, more than 20,000 residents of Nizhny Novgorod receive assistance across all the center’s service areas. Services are provided free of charge under the compulsory health insurance (OMS) policy.

Recall that the protection of motherhood and childhood is a key area of work under the new national project “Family.” It has been in effect in the country since 2025 by order of Russian President Vladimir Putin and is the successor to the previously implemented national projects “Demography” and “Culture.”
