Nizhny Novgorod doctors saved the sight of more than 200 patients with retinal tears.

      Since the beginning of 2025, ophthalmologists at the Semashko Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital have performed more than 200 operations on patients with retinal tears. This was reported by the Telegram channel "Bokal Presseka."

      A macular hole is a defect in the central area of the retina that is responsible for visual acuity and detail.

      The main symptom of the condition is a sudden deterioration of central vision. Images become distorted, straight lines appear wavy, and a dark spot appears in the center of the visual field.

      The causes of macular hole formation are not fully understood. However, the condition most often occurs in women aged 45 to 65.

      Sometimes the hole is discovered incidentally. For example, when the healthy eye is covered, the patient suddenly notices distortions in the other eye.

      This year, ophthalmic surgeons at the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital have performed about two hundred surgeries for full-thickness macular holes. A modern ophthalmic microscope allows such procedures to be performed painlessly and in as little as half an hour. To close the hole in the macula, doctors use a bioadhesive made from the patient’s blood plasma enriched with platelets.

      Earlier it was reported that Nizhny Novgorod doctors had reattached a man’s arm that had been severed by a saw.
