A 56-year-old employee of one of Nizhny Novgorod's universities became the victim of a large-scale fraud. For two weeks the man was under constant telephone control by the perpetrators and followed their instructions, transferring his savings and funds obtained on credit to accounts controlled by the scammers.

According to the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Nizhny Novgorod Region, in early September the victim began receiving calls from unknown individuals who identified themselves as employees of Roskomnadzor and law enforcement agencies. They said that a power of attorney to dispose of funds had allegedly been issued in his name. To cancel these actions, the man was persuaded to strictly follow their instructions.

Fearing the loss of his savings, the victim transferred more than 11.2 million rubles to a so-called "safe" account. He then took out a 3 million ruble loan and, at the request of the perpetrators, handed the cash to an unknown woman, packing it into a bag.

The total damage amounted to over 14 million rubles. A criminal case has been opened under Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Fraud").

The Nizhny Novgorod police urge citizens to exercise caution when receiving calls from strangers. Do not disclose bank account details to outsiders or make transfers at their request. If you receive suspicious information about the movement of funds, contact your bank directly or seek advice from relatives.

If you or your acquaintances have encountered similar cases, you should immediately report this to the nearest police station.

Earlier it was reported that telephone scammers had persuaded three Nizhny Novgorod residents to transfer more than 12 million rubles.
