On October 5 believers commemorate the prophet Jonah and the martyr Phocas; in the folk calendar the date is named in their honor. In Russia on this day people treated their neighbors to radishes and walked in the forest, and they were also afraid to eat fish and to sleep for a long time. Today we will tell you what else was allowed and what was forbidden in old times.

Folk omens for October 5: what not to do

Our ancestors believed that on this day one should not work a lot. Exhausting labor could lead to illness.

It was forbidden to borrow money. According to the sages who lived in Rus', doing so could cause one to lose all material wealth and sources of income.

Experts in omens advised against taking salt and flour out of the house. The belief was that prosperity would leave the dwelling along with the foodstuffs.

On October 5 you should not pamper children too much. Because of this they would live with their parents until their hair turned gray and would not be able to find work or start their own families.

A wife should not complain about her husband. Otherwise the husband will leave for a lover.

So that a young beauty does not remain a spinster, on October 5 she should not look into a mirror for too long. Through the reflection her attractiveness and youth could be stolen by evil forces.

If you believe in omens, do not prepare fish and do not eat it. Our ancestors thought that this food could become the cause of serious problems in life.

It is not recommended to sleep longer than usual. Those who broke this rule in old times were foretold poverty.

Try not to make promises. The situation may turn out such that you will not be able to keep your word. This can lead to a quarrel with a close person.

Do not give anyone red items as gifts. Along with them your financial luck will leave you forever.

If you have houseplants, you should not repot them. They will not take root in a new pot and will soon die.

Folk omens for October 5: what can be done

On the day of Jonah and Phocas our ancestors paid attention to their health. In the morning they washed with water from three sources, believing that this would give them triple strength. They often added a little holy water to the washing water. In the evening it was customary to go to the bathhouse.

Breakfast was hearty, and radish was always present on the table. This root vegetable was considered very healthy in old times. Generous housewives in Rus' strove to treat not only household members but also neighbors to radish so that the whole neighborhood would meet the winter in good health.

To attract financial luck, many performed the following ritual on October 5. At noon one had to go to the forest, find an old stump and bury a coin beside it. After that it was required to walk around the stump seven times counterclockwise and leave without looking back. If someone calls out to you, it means wealth will soon come to your home. But you must not turn toward the voice: the ancients believed that this could make you a victim of evil spirits.

In ancient times this day was rarely devoted to meetings with relatives or new acquaintances. It was believed that one could have a serious quarrel over nothing and even make enemies. Therefore our ancestors tried to socialize only with the closest people, not inviting even good friends into their homes. They did not, however, avoid kind neighbors, but preferred to speak with them outside, for example to give them radish.

At night one can see a prophetic dream. Most likely it will help understand whether your cherished desire will come true. It is better not to reveal the details of the dream to anyone, because doing so will surely prevent your dream from coming true.
