Former head of Nizhny Novgorod Oleg Sorokin has filed an application for conditional early release, Kommersant-Privolzhye reports.
He is currently serving a 10-year sentence for receiving a bribe in the form of a service, as well as for complicity in the kidnapping of a person. To date, Sorokin has spent almost eight years behind bars.
The hearing on the defense's petition for conditional early release is scheduled for mid-October. At the hearing, the court intends to hear the position of the victim in the case, Alexander Novoselov.
In 2004 Novoselov was forcibly taken to a forest by criminal investigation officers with the involvement of Sorokin, who was then still a businessman. These actions were carried out as part of a so-called "operational experiment," which the court later found to be unlawful.
It is reported that the victim has already filed formal objections with the court against the early release of the former mayor. In his view, Oleg Sorokin does not deserve conditional early release.
Earlier it was reported that the Nizhny Novgorod prosecutor's office filed a lawsuit seeking to recover an additional two billion rubles from Oleg Sorokin.
