The rise in sugar prices and products containing it may become noticeable by the end of the year. The price increase will affect not only the product itself but also confectionery, desserts and other sweet products, writes the site 360.ru.

According to the Telegram channel Mash, the cost of sugar could rise by about 20% due to a sharp drop in sugar beet yields. In that case, a kilogram would increase from the current 68 to 81 rubles.

The main sowing areas are concentrated in the Belgorod, Kursk, Voronezh and Lipetsk regions. However, harvests in these regions were a quarter lower than last year. Problems began back in May: severe frosts destroyed young plantings, and farmers had to replant about 80% of the fields.

When the plants began to gain mass, they were hit by drought. As a result, yields fell to 252 centners per hectare. Average supplies of sugar beet nationwide fell by almost half, and in the Belgorod region — by 96%.

Economist Vasily Koltashov, director of the Institute of the New Society, spoke about the prospects for sugar price increases. In his estimate, by the New Year the rise will be at least 10%. He noted that for many years Russia experienced excess beet harvests, which affected both sugar production and its export. Now the situation has changed.

"If sugar becomes more expensive, this will automatically lead to higher prices for jam, candies and other products containing sugar. At the same time, I am not taking into account factors such as rising tariffs or fuel price increases, which we are already seeing," Koltashov stressed.

The economist added that basic foodstuffs are protected by a low VAT of 10%, but in the longer term the situation may push Russians to give up sugar.

Koltashov believes that replacing sugar with stevia or other natural substitutes could become not only a healthy habit but also an economically justified decision.

"Sugar is a cheap pleasure for which you later have to pay dearly at the dentist," he said.

The expert also recalled that the availability of sweets and carbonated drinks is directly linked to the rise in obesity worldwide. In this regard, he proposed considering a reduction of VAT on products with sugar substitutes so that they could compete with traditional sweets.

Earlier it was reported that the minimum food basket in the Nizhny Novgorod region had risen to 7,125 rubles.

It also turned out that the food basket costs residents of Nizhny Novgorod 10,000 rubles per month.
