The Central Bank will present a new 1,000-ruble banknote featuring "Meteor" at the end of 2025.
September 30, 2025, 16:39 — Society. The Bank of Russia plans to present an updated 1,000-ruble banknote at the end of 2025, the head of the Central Bank, Elvira Nabiullina, said at an advisory council meeting on September 30. A video of the meeting was posted on the main financial regulator’s page on VKontakte.
Recall that the 1,000-ruble note is dedicated to the Volga Federal District and its central district — Nizhny Novgorod. The front side was to depict the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin. The other side was to be adorned with the church of the Kazan Kremlin. But a scandal erupted over the absence of a cross on the church. Because of this, the release of the updated thousand-ruble note had to be suspended.
The Central Bank held a public online vote to choose a new symbol. About 700,000 people took part in the vote. The winner was the image of the "Meteor" — a high-speed passenger vessel that runs on the Volga (in particular, it operates between Nizhny Novgorod and Kazan and back).
According to Nabiullina, the concept for the new banknote has already received approval from the board of directors. Artists are now working on creating a draft design.
The presentation is scheduled for the end of the year. However, the new "thousand" will enter circulation no earlier than a year to a year and a half from now.
"Updating the appearance of a banknote is not the Central Bank’s whim; they must undergo modernization, have a modern look and an increased level of protection against counterfeiting," the head of the Central Bank emphasized.
