Yuri Shalabaev has been elected mayor of Nizhny Novgorod.

29 September 2025 15:01 Politics Yuri Shalabaev was re-elected mayor of Nizhny Novgorod at a City Duma session on 29 September, reports a correspondent of NIA "Nizhny Novgorod."

There were two candidates for the position: the incumbent mayor Yuri Shalabaev and the former deputy head of the city Interior Ministry (UMVD), member of the city Public Chamber, Sergey Goryachev.

Thirty-six deputies voted for Shalabaev. One voted against and two abstained. Only three deputies voted for Goryachev.

Immediately after his election the head of the city took the oath. He also thanked the deputies for their trust and called for working as a united team with the mayor’s office, the regional government and the residents.

As previously reported, before the mayoral election the deputies prematurely terminated Shalabaev’s powers. In a report, Shalabaev said that Nizhny Novgorod had become his responsibility.

"And this, in the proper sense of the word, 'burden' we shared together, working for the benefit of the city and each of its residents," he said, adding that he understands the city’s pain points.

It was also reported that Evgenia Chintsova was elected chairwoman of the newly convened Nizhny Novgorod Duma.
