The City Duma prematurely terminated the powers of Nizhny Novgorod Mayor Yuri Shalabaev.

      At the first meeting of the Nizhny Novgorod Duma of the 1st convocation on September 29, deputies unanimously voted for the early termination of the term of office of the city head, Yuri Shalabaev. The decision was supported by all 39 elected representatives, reports a correspondent of NIA "Nizhny Novgorod".

      The basis for the termination of his powers was the merger of Nizhny Novgorod and the Kstovo district. The law provides that in the event of a transformation of a municipality, the term of the acting head of local self-government is interrupted. Without this, Shalabaev's powers would have ended only on October 28.

      Also today, September 29, deputies will consider the issue of appointing a new mayor. Governor Gleb Nikitin submitted two candidates for the parliament's consideration — Yuri Shalabaev and the former deputy head of the city Department of Internal Affairs (UMVD), member of the Public Chamber of Nizhny Novgorod, Sergey Goryachev.

      It was also reported that Evgeny Chintsov became chairman of the Nizhny Novgorod Duma of the 1st convocation.
