The qualifying round of the "Word and Gesture" competition continues.

      Until October 14, the regional qualifying round of the 8th All‑Russian competition on non‑visual use of touchscreen smartphones "By Word and Gesture" is taking place across the regions of the Russian Federation. Its participants demonstrate the rehabilitative capabilities of modern mobile technology for people with visual impairments. The winners of the qualifying round will meet in the final, which will be held in Nizhny Novgorod.

      Today an ordinary smartphone is an indispensable rehabilitation aid and a universal mobile assistant for people with limited vision. Thanks to built‑in accessibility features, blind and partially sighted people independently communicate with friends and relatives, find the information they need and make purchases, manage finances and use government services. In addition, a smartphone helps to read a bill or a sign, recognize or label objects, describe the surrounding space and play audio description for a film. All of this provides independence in solving everyday tasks, as well as in study and work.

      The competition is organized within the framework of the all‑Russian social project "Universal Mobile Assistant", implemented by the Camerata Center in partnership with NGOs from the regions of the Russian Federation with the support of PJSC MegaFon.

      Thanks to the project, since 2017 free mobile literacy courses have been organized across the country, where experienced blind specialists teach how to use all the functions of a smartphone without looking at the screen, using special gestures and voice commands. Over eight years more than 100 trainers have been trained and more than 2,000 people with visual impairments have been taught; a professional community of specialists has been formed and access to qualified support has been ensured.
