The Nizhny Novgorod IT Campus will hold the second open programming olympiad for students in grades 5–11. The event is aimed at identifying and supporting talented students who are passionate about computer science and solving algorithmic problems.

The competition will be held in two stages: remote qualifying rounds and an in-person final in Nizhny Novgorod. Participants will need to demonstrate their problem-solving skills within a limited time. Points are awarded even for partially correct solutions, which allows assessment not only of the result but also of the contestants’ line of thought.

A key principle of the olympiad is creating equal conditions and opportunities for young talents. Therefore, winners and prize-winners of the final stage of the All-Russian School Olympiad (VSOSh) in computer science are not allowed to participate. This makes it possible to focus on supporting novice olympiad participants, give them a chance to show themselves, demonstrate their abilities and compete for valuable prizes.

“For our IT University, holding the olympiad is not just a competition but an important part of the mission to form a new generation of IT specialists. We strive to create an environment where every talented schoolchild, regardless of prior experience, can receive a powerful impetus for development. Our task is to help young people make the first serious step in a professional career by providing them with modern educational resources and expert support,” said acting rector Alexey Khabibullin.

Methodological and organizational support for the olympiad is provided by the IT University’s Laboratory of Olympiad Programming, which oversees work with Nizhny Novgorod schoolchildren and students participating in national and international competitions.

“We specifically design problems that require not only knowledge of programming languages but also unconventional, creative thinking. This year we have prepared several surprises for participants, including problems with an unusual format. This is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience for future victories,” emphasized the head of the University’s Laboratory of Olympiad Programming, Alexey Shmelyov.

Registration for the first qualifying round of the olympiad is open until September 30; the round itself will be held online on October 5. Registration for the second remote qualifying stage, scheduled for October 29, will be open until October 24. The in-person final will take place in Nizhny Novgorod at the end of November.

Recall that the Nizhny Novgorod IT Campus is an interuniversity educational ecosystem. Located in Nizhny Novgorod, known for its engineering and scientific schools and IT community, the campus combines student education and advanced research, focusing on the current needs of Russian business. Currently, five educational programs are being implemented, developed jointly with the largest companies in the Russian IT industry: in artificial intelligence and computer vision, artificial and augmented intelligence technologies, microelectronics, information security and digital technologies in construction. The campus’s research centers and laboratories conduct advanced research in similar fields. The IT Campus also retrains IT specialists, places special emphasis on supporting and developing talented schoolchildren and students, and on improving teachers’ qualifications.

At the behest of President Vladimir Putin, a network of modern campuses is being created in Russia. By 2030, a constellation of 25 campuses should appear in the country. One of them has already been fully built in Moscow on the basis of Bauman Moscow State Technical University. Currently, with the support of the national project “Youth and Children,” 24 such student towns are being designed and built. By 2036, the number of campuses will increase to 40. The campus concepts envisage creating a unique and comprehensive environment for individual and team development with a large number of open educational spaces and adaptable classrooms. This will help form a shared corporate culture among teachers, students and researchers. The project is financed from federal and regional budgets as well as from off-budget sources. Work in this area is being carried out by the Government of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia.

Two calls for proposals to create campuses have been held, within which 17 projects were selected (8 projects in 2021 and 9 projects in 2022). Eight more projects were determined by separate presidential directives from Vladimir Putin. They will be implemented in Zabaykalsky Krai, Kamchatka Krai, Primorsky Krai, Murmansk and Smolensk oblasts, the Republic of Buryatia, and two projects will be in Moscow, based at the Moscow State University of Civil Engineering (MGSU) and the Moscow State Technological University “Stankin.”
