      In the town of Shakhunya in the Nizhny Novgorod Region, police detained a 22-year-old local resident suspected of stealing a VAZ. This was reported by the press service of the regional Interior Ministry.

      According to police, the incident occurred on Komsomolskaya Street. Taking advantage of the fact that the owner had left the unlocked car with the keys in the ignition, the young man got behind the wheel and tried to drive away.

      However, having no driver's license and no experience operating a vehicle, he lost control while exiting the parking lot. The car collided with another vehicle parked nearby. After the accident the perpetrator fled the scene. It should be noted that the car thief was intoxicated.

      A criminal case has been opened against the detainee. It is known that he had no prior criminal record. As a preventive measure he was placed under an obligation to appear.

      Law enforcement reminds vehicle owners to observe safety measures. Do not leave cars with doors or windows open, or with keys in the ignition.

      It is also recommended not to leave valuables in the car, to use an alarm system, and, if possible, to park in guarded lots.

      Earlier it was reported that police detained a resident of Nizhny Novgorod suspected of a brazen armed robbery and of stealing a BMW worth 13 million rubles.
