In Nizhny Novgorod, a graffiti mural honoring the partisan heroes, the Ignatov brothers, was unveiled.

      On September 11, a ceremonial unveiling took place in Nizhny Novgorod of graffiti dedicated to the legendary partisan brothers, Heroes of the Soviet Union Yevgeny and Gennady Ignatov. The memorial art installation was created by the Nizhny Novgorod regional branch of “Volunteers of Victory” with the support of the government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region as part of the large-scale regional project “Image of Victory.”

      The art installation on the wall of a transformer substation, located on the street named after the heroes in the Sovetsky District of Nizhny Novgorod, symbolically linked the past and the present. The ceremony was attended by the Chairman of the Duma of Nizhny Novgorod Evgeny Chintsov, Deputy Head of the Administration of the Sovetsky District Roman Oznobishin, Volunteers of Victory volunteers, Young Army cadets from School No. 181 in Nizhny Novgorod and activists of the “Movement of the First.”

      The brothers Yevgeny and Gennady Ignatov heroically died while carrying out a combat mission in occupied Krasnodar. Their father, Petr Karpovich Ignatov, led a partisan detachment in which Yevgeny was chief of staff and the young Gennady was a demolition fighter. On October 10, 1942, the brothers blew up an enemy echelon on the Krasnodar–Novorossiysk railway, destroying about 500 enemy soldiers and officers. They died during the operation. On March 7, 1943, Yevgeny and Gennady were posthumously awarded the title Heroes of the Soviet Union.

      “The mural unveiled today is a symbol of remembrance and respect for the feat of those who fought for the freedom of our Motherland during the Great Patriotic War. That war became an example of the mass heroism of Soviet people, but among the many feats there are special stories. The story of the partisan brothers Yevgeny and Gennady Ignatov is one of them. These young people sacrificed themselves to blow up an enemy echelon. At the cost of their lives they brought the Great Victory closer,” said the Chairman of the Duma of Nizhny Novgorod and participant in the “Time of Heroes” program Evgeny Chintsov.

      “The Ignatov brothers are an astonishing symbol of courage and selfless love for the Motherland. They could have saved themselves, but consciously went to their deaths to stop the enemy… The feat of these almost boys moves you to tears, gives you goosebumps. But how do you convey these emotions to young people, the contemporaries of the heroes? Street art, graffiti — this is precisely the format that touches the hearts of modern schoolchildren and students, makes them stop, look up and think. Let the graffiti remind us of the price paid by the generation of victors for our peaceful sky,” said Maria Samodelkina, head of the NRO VOD “Volunteers of Victory.”

      The Volunteers of Victory project “Image of Victory” was included in 2024 among the 100 best patriotic projects in the country according to the Presidential Grants Foundation. Over five years, 338 graffiti honoring heroes of the Great Patriotic War and the Special Military Operation have been created in the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
