      Incidents

      Officers of the FSB Directorate for the Nizhny Novgorod Region, together with the Privolzhskaya Operational Customs, thwarted an attempt to illegally import precious stones into the country. During the operation, a resident of the region suspected of smuggling diamonds was detained. This was reported by the FSB directorate.

      According to the investigation, the man took jewelry with non-precious inserts out of Russia. Upon arriving in the United Arab Emirates, he purchased 15 diamonds and replaced the stones in the jewelry with them to conceal the import of the gems when returning home.

      Returning to Russia, the offender passed through the so-called "green corridor," failing to declare the diamonds, which are subject to mandatory written declaration. The import of such goods is prohibited or restricted by current legislation.

      The market value of the illegally imported stones exceeds 2 million rubles. A criminal case has been opened against the suspect under Part 2 of Article 226.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation — smuggling of strategically important goods and resources.

      The man was placed under an undertaking not to leave. Operational-search measures are being carried out to establish all the circumstances of the illegal activity, as well as possible accomplices.

      Earlier it was reported that the smuggling of precursors and potent substances worth 7 billion rubles was thwarted in the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
