A German citizen was unable to obtain the return of a child whom the mother had taken from the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) to Russia without his consent. Nizhny Novgorod courts of two instances denied the man's claim. This was reported by the regional court.

As the courts found, the plaintiff and the defendant lived together in Germany, were not legally married, and were raising a child they had together. In the summer of 2024 the woman left the country and took the child to Russia to her parents, citing a psychologically tense family environment.

On April 17, 2025, the Kanavinsky District Court of Nizhny Novgorod denied the German citizen's request to have the child returned. He appealed, but on September 10, 2025 the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Court upheld the first-instance decision and left it unchanged.

The court referred to Article 13 of the Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction, which permits the refusal to return a child where certain circumstances exist.

The appellate ruling entered into legal force upon its announcement.

Earlier it was reported that police officers removed a one-and-a-half-year-old child from a troubled woman in Nizhny Novgorod.
