The Nizhny Novgorod multimedia project "How Does Heritage Sound?", created by the Zapovednye Kvartaly team of the ANO ASIRIS (Agency for the Preservation and Development of Historical Environment Objects of the Nizhny Novgorod Region), will be exhibited in Zaryadye Park. The exhibition titled "The Intimate — The Living" will open ahead of Moscow City Day on September 12 and will run until December 7.
The exposition will include works by creative communities, artists, photographers, musicians and designers who reinterpret cultural heritage and folk art into original formats.
The opening of the exhibition is timed to the 878th anniversary of Moscow’s founding. Most of the exhibits offer a new perspective on the images of historic towns, their inhabitants and age-old traditions.
"The project 'How Does Heritage Sound?' was created by the ASIRIS team in 2024. It was first presented at the World Festival of Youth in Sochi, then in Minsk, at the international exhibition-fair 'Otdykh 2024', and now its interactive zone is operating in Nizhny Novgorod for guests of the quarter of the Church of the Three Holy Hierarchs. This project gives us the opportunity to listen to the sound of the distinctive art of wood carving and to learn what forms the basis of this music, which is close in spirit to every resident of Russia. The ASIRIS team not only selected the motifs, but also compiled the results of historical research on protective symbols into a single convenient resource accessible to everyone. We managed to create a unique narrative about the heritage of the Nizhny Novgorod Region," said Sergey Yakovlev, Minister of Tourism and Crafts of the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
By putting on headphones and selecting on the interactive monitor a symbol of the traditional protective carving of the old houses of Nizhny Novgorod, Gorodets, Arzamas and Lyskovo, visitors can hear how they sound. Specifically for this, Nizhny Novgorod composer Anna Lutoshkina wrote a track inspired by the motifs of carved window surrounds.
"Wood carving on the houses of Nizhny Novgorod and the region has its own figurative language. Our ancestors believed in the magical forces of nature and depicted them on houses for protection against dark forces. The integration of the 'How Does Heritage Sound?' project into the World Festival of Youth in Sochi showed an incredible emotional response from the younger generation of different countries. We created a web version of the project, within which users have access to 11 protective symbols: meltwater, an oak leaf (a sign of fertility), a sown field (a sign of rebirth), a heart (a symbol of life's awakening), the sun, rain, a sprout (representing the harvest), male and female pharaoh figures (amulets that came into homes from ship carving), a lion (a symbol of strength) and birds (which indicate the end of autumn). Each symbol is accompanied by an audio track. We love this project and believe it will be of interest to Muscovites and visitors to the capital," said Ekaterina Kryunas, General Director of ANO ASIRIS.
Residents of Nizhny Novgorod and visitors can learn about the project at the cultural center at 18 Korolenko Street, as well as on the website: Какзвучитнаследие.рф.
The regional Ministry of Tourism and Crafts noted that such projects contribute to the development of tourism and correspond to the goals and objectives of the national project "Tourism and Hospitality."
Recall that the national project "Tourism and Hospitality" has been implemented in the country since 2025 at the initiative of President Vladimir Putin and involves the development of infrastructure, production of equipment, training of personnel for the tourism sector, promotion of travel within Russia, as well as ensuring quality service and safe, comfortable trips.
