Foxes roam the streets of Nizhny Novgorod.
Red-haired, fearless, elusive — and already a star of our broadcast and social media. Since the beginning of August this fox has repeatedly appeared in the lenses of city residents' cameras. She has been seen everywhere: on the Verkhne-Volzhskaya Embankment, and on Rodionova, Minin, and Rozhdestvenskaya streets.
Tatyana Plotnova, correspondent: "Not only the streets of Nizhny Novgorod, but the Kremlin itself is becoming a place for walks of the red beauties. For example, here, on the roof of the Kremlin wall, not far from the Georgievskaya Tower, workers in 2021 during restoration work noticed a fox. As explained by the regional Ministry of Forestry, foxes have made burrows both on the territory of the Kremlin and outside its walls."
Where the foxes in Nizhny Novgorod come from can only be guessed. Possibly this is a new generation of the Kremlin family. It's also possible they reach the metropolis from other districts of the region.
A fox can easily cover 40 kilometers along the shore in one night. The red guests are not captured in the city. Instead, vaccination methods are used. Employees of the State Veterinary Administration place bait where a fox might pass.
Dmitry Tepaev, head of the "Anti-epizootic Squad" department of the State Budgetary Institution of the Nizhny Novgorod Region "State Veterinary Administration of the urban district of N. Novgorod":
"This is a virus vaccine for the oral immunization of wild carnivores against rabies. These are briquettes, they are frozen. They contain an inactivated virus that immunizes the animal, while the animal does not get sick."
The briquettes themselves are inconspicuous but have a strong smell that attracts foxes. By eating such bait, the animal receives the necessary dose of vaccine. And, as specialists from the regional Ministry of Forestry explain, if you meet a fox in the city, most likely it is a curious kit that is not yet a year old. August is the time when the grown individuals leave the parental home and go in search of their own territory.
Pavel Semyonov, chief specialist of the Nizhny Novgorod Interregional Forestry Office of the Ministry of Forestry of the Nizhny Novgorod Region:
"And they don't see danger in people, because everyone tries to feed them, and feeding them is simply not allowed, categorically forbidden! Because they begin to perceive people as an object of sustenance."
You should not approach a wild animal either. Although foxes usually do not show aggression, if they feel threatened they can bite.
