A training session to prepare for taking the GTO standards for participants of the educational program "Heroes. Nizhny Novgorod Region" and their families took place in Nizhny Novgorod. The event was held this past weekend at the combat veterans' sports club in the sports and recreation center (FOK) of the "Radiy" sports school.

Participants trained in five disciplines: push-ups, raising the torso from a lying position (sit-ups), forward bends, the 3x10 meter shuttle run, and shooting with electronic weapons.

"As noted by the Chairman of the Nizhny Novgorod City Duma, participant in the 'Time of Heroes' program, Yevgeny Chintsov, almost everyone met the standards; the results will count toward receiving the GTO badge.

"Two weeks ago at a meeting with participants of the 'Heroes. Nizhny Novgorod Region' program, the guys themselves suggested organizing a training session to prepare for the GTO complex. The combat veterans' sports club continues to carry out its main tasks: maintaining physical health and assisting the social adaptation of combat veterans. It is important that many program participants chose movement and development on their day off," said the Chairman of the Nizhny Novgorod Duma, participant in the "Time of Heroes" program, Yevgeny Chintsov.

According to deputy of the Nizhny Novgorod Duma and head of the "Radiy" sports school Vladimir Poddymnikov-Gordeev, such events allow program participants to test their strength and, by their example, show how important it is to adhere to a healthy lifestyle.

"We had a great time beneficial for our health. Taking the GTO is a good way to test yourself and set a new vector for self-development. It is a clear example that a modern leader should be versatile: successful in his profession, active in public life, and finding time to take care of his health. Such initiatives motivate both the participants themselves and everyone around them to do sports and lead a healthy lifestyle," he said.

The participants themselves also note the need for joint team-building events.

"The goal of such events is not only to promote a healthy lifestyle but also to strengthen the bond between program participants and their families. Many of the guys came with their wives and children; we were able to communicate in an informal setting. It is important that the program was designed taking into account the characteristics of our participants with disabilities. Such meetings are also very important for team cohesion," shared participant of the "Heroes. Nizhny Novgorod Region" program Ildus Mustafin.

"Such events should be held more often, involving the families of SVO veterans, especially children, so that by the example of their parents and other program participants they know that sport is what helps you improve. I want to take part in a similar training session again to show a better result," said another program participant, Artem Sazonov.

It should be recalled that the "Heroes. Nizhny Novgorod Region" program is aimed at the integration and employment of participants and veterans of the special military operation into the public administration system. In March 2025, an agreement was signed between the government of Nizhny Novgorod Region, RANHiGS and KUPNO on cooperation in implementing this program.

Registration for participation in the "Heroes. Nizhny Novgorod Region" program closed on March 31. During the selection campaign, 1,613 applications were received from Nizhny Novgorod residents.

Based on the total scores from questionnaires, testing, online interviews and assessment, as well as on the results of in-person interviews with the Deputy Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region Andrey Gneushev, 60 participants were selected for the main educational program and 30 people were chosen for inclusion in the next cohort of the program upon their return to the region.

On August 4, 2025, the official opening of training under the "Heroes. Nizhny Novgorod Region" program took place; the governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region, Gleb Nikitin, took part in the ceremony. Sixty people selected to participate in the educational program began their training.
