      In the Perevozsky district, officers of the local police department detained a 63-year-old shepherd on suspicion of illegal possession of narcotic substances, the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Nizhny Novgorod Region reported.

      The operational-preventive operation took place on the premises of one of the farming households. During an inspection, police found in the man's trailer a packet containing a green, plant-based substance.

      A forensic examination confirmed that the seized substance was marijuana. The total weight of the drug was almost 29 grams.

      According to the detainee, he found a wild hemp bush while grazing livestock, dried it and kept it for personal use. The man claims he did not intend to sell the drug.

      A criminal case has been opened against the detainee under Part 1 of Article 228 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation — illegal acquisition and possession of narcotic drugs. He was placed under a written undertaking not to leave. The article's penalties provide for punishment in the form of a fine or imprisonment for up to three years.

      Earlier it was reported that an illegal marijuana plantation was discovered in the Vadsky district.
