      In 2025, 30 animal species and another 30 new species of fungi, plants and lichens were added to the Red Book of the Nizhny Novgorod Region. This was reported to the publication "Zhivem v Nizhnem" by the regional Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources.

      This year the Red Book included the following animal species: great egret, klusha (female capercaillie), bearded tit, eastern fantail, Sivers’s crested tit, yellow “medveditsa” (a moth), fluffy cocoon moth and 23 other species. Also, 47 species were removed from the list, among them the grey woodpecker, Russian sturgeon, Volga herring, and others.

      The region’s Red Book was supplemented with 30 species of plants, fungi and lichens. Among them are the Bessarabian dandelion, Hartman’s sedge, the white (or Russian) truffle, the yellowing onion, Pontic wormwood, and others. Twelve species were removed from the list: Flerov’s monkshood, woolly-mouthed monkshood, snakeweed (or viviparous knotweed), Russian fritillary, nodding sage, dark-red (or rusty) helleborine, mealy primrose, Meezia triquetra, Pycnothelia papillosa, Bryoria cinerea (grayish bryoria), Usnea duplicata, Peltigera membranacea.
