It is the very end of summer that decides what next year’s harvest will be like
Gardeners often make the same mistake: after picking currants in August they forget about the bushes until spring. But it is precisely at this time that the plant sets the buds for next year’s crop and is especially vulnerable to pests. If you don’t protect it now, you can lose half the berries next season. The greatest danger at the end of summer is the bud mite and the codling — one damages the buds, the other chews the berries from the inside. And it’s better to fight them not with the usual sprayings but by dusting the bushes with a special dry mixture, writes the author of the Zen channel "At Grandpa Yegor's Dacha."
Why is dust better than water? It’s simple. Sprays are quickly washed off by dew or rain, and their residues often provoke fungal disease. Dust, however, settles in a thin film, penetrates small cracks and remains on the leaves and branches much longer. It paralyzes and dehydrates pests, destroying them without harming the plant while also providing additional nutrition.
For dusting, the time-tested "August armor" is used. Its composition includes wood ash, tobacco dust, ground red pepper, garden sulfur, starch and boric acid. All components are easy to find for sale and mix in literally five minutes. Such powder works in several ways at once: it destroys pests, strengthens the bush, protects buds from light frost and prevents fungal diseases.
Dusting is best done in the morning on the dew or after rain so the mixture sticks more reliably. Don’t dump the powder in piles — it should be carefully distributed through a sieve over all branches, including the middle of the bushes where insects like to hide.
The treatment schedule is simple: the first time — immediately after harvest, the second — in 10–14 days, the third — in early September if warm and humid weather persists. In a damp autumn it is enough to dust the bushes with ash only — this will provide both protection and nutrition.
The result is visible within a week: leaves become firm and richly colored. Later, the swelling buds look bigger and stronger, and in spring they do not dry out or freeze. Next season the bushes produce noticeably larger berries, and diseases and pests steer clear. And all this is achieved without chemicals or purchased products, only with accessible natural ingredients.
It is the very end of summer that decides what next year’s harvest will be like. If you support the bushes during this period, they will repay you with large, juicy, healthy berries. But if you leave them unprotected after harvesting, in spring you may find bare branches or small, sickly berries. Dacha gardeners should remember: for currants, August is not the end of the season, but the starting point for a rich future harvest.
