Twenty-one years ago Russia was shaken by a terrible tragedy. On September 1, 2004, terrorists seized Beslan School No. 1 in North Ossetia right during the morning assembly on Knowledge Day. More than a thousand people were taken hostage, and 334 were killed. Of them, 186 were children.
Every year from September 1 to 3 memorial events take place in Beslan.
And for the fourth time pupils from the Volodarsky and Balakhninsky districts of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast are taking part in them as part of the project "Beslan. Memory Watch," initiated by regional Legislative Assembly deputy Igor Ruzankin.
In memory of the victims, a memorial service was held in the former sports center. From early morning people brought flowers, bottles of water and toys there.
Several thousand people heard a mourning bell in the schoolyard. Then the column of those gathered moved to the "City of Angels," where the deceased are buried. At the "Tree of Sorrow" flowers and bottles of water were laid. After the liturgy the names of all 334 fallen were read aloud.
And in the evening, when it was less crowded, candles were lit. 334 again.
