      Law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the tragic incident that occurred on Chapaeva Street in the town of Balakhna in the Nizhny Novgorod Region, where five people died.

      Investigators of the Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the region, together with police officers, are clarifying all the circumstances of what happened. One of the priority versions being considered is the consumption of poor-quality alcohol.

      The press service of the regional main directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that checks are currently being carried out at retail outlets where the victims may have purchased alcoholic products. Special attention is being paid to identifying possible cases of the sale of counterfeit or surrogate alcoholic beverages.

      In addition, the Prosecutor’s Office of the Nizhny Novgorod Region has initiated supervisory measures. During them a legal assessment will be made of compliance with the requirements of the legislation governing the circulation of alcoholic and alcohol-containing products.

      The investigation of this criminal case is ongoing.

      It was previously reported that a bill to restrict alcohol sales in the Nizhny Novgorod Region is being revised.
