A series of deaths allegedly linked to the consumption of poor-quality alcohol has been recorded in Balakhna, Nizhny Novgorod Region. Five people died in the city within 24 hours.

According to the agency "Stacionar-Press", the first alarm call reached emergency services on 30 August at 16:50. The arriving paramedics found the body of a man whom they could no longer help.

Ten minutes later a new call came in — this time a 31-year-old woman was affected. She was rushed to the Central District Hospital, but despite the efforts of medical staff, she died in intensive care.

Closer to eight in the evening a third incident occurred. The man was hospitalized, but he could not be saved either — resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

On the morning of the next day, 31 August, emergency services at the same address recorded two more cases of poisoning. One of the men died before doctors arrived, the second died despite resuscitation attempts.

According to preliminary data, the youngest victim was 31 years old, the others were over forty.

The main theory at the moment is that the poisoning was caused by the consumption of surrogate alcohol, possibly containing methanol or other toxic impurities.

It was previously reported that in 2024 nearly 150 Nizhny Novgorod residents were poisoned by surrogate alcohol.
