      A criminal case has been opened in the Nizhny Novgorod region on charges of illegal hunting. The offender was caught red-handed while butchering moose carcasses. Damage to the budget amounted to 160,000 rubles, the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Nizhny Novgorod Region reports.

      Police received a report from the Ministry of Forestry about the illegal killing of a moose in the publicly accessible hunting grounds near the village of Tonshaevo. The poaching incident was detected thanks to the "Vyistrel" acoustic monitoring system. Officers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs who arrived at the scene detained the poacher. He turned out to be a 40-year-old resident of the settlement of Tonshaevo.

      The man did not have a permit to hunt wild ungulates. However, he had registered firearms. He went into the forest to hunt illegally, knowing that hunting cloven‑hoofed animals was prohibited at that time. The man tracked down two moose and shot them. After that he butchered the carcasses and planned to dispose of the remains after taking the meat. However, he was caught at the scene.

      Two hundred and twenty kilograms of meat and a carbine were seized from the scene. The man was released under an undertaking to appear. For the crime he faces a fine of up to 1 million rubles or imprisonment for up to five years.
