      A program to restore unique wooden churches and bell towers has launched in the Nizhny Novgorod region. This was reported by the autonomous non-profit organization ASIRIS.

      The agency noted that the works were initiated at the instruction of the region’s governor, Gleb Nikitin, and are being carried out with the support of NNGASU and with the blessing of Metropolitan Georgy of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas.

      A large-scale study has already been conducted, during which a list of sites in need of priority restoration was compiled.

      The list includes five monuments of wooden architecture:

      - the Church of Zosima and Savvaty (1894) in the village of Bolshoye Pole, Voskresensky District;

      - the complex of the Trinity and Protection (Pokrov) Churches (1874) with elements of a log structure dating to 1779 in the village of Goryashino (formerly Khudyakovo), Gorodetsky District;

      - the Znamenskaya Church with a preserved bell tower from the late 19th–early 20th century in the village of Znamenskoye, Voskresensky District;

      - the bell tower of the Pokrov Church from the early 20th century in the village of Budilikha in the same district;

      - the bell tower of the Church of Elijah the Prophet (1773) in the village of Ilyinskoye, Krasnobakovsky District.

      ASIRIS noted that wooden churches are not only of historical and cultural value but also important testimony to the architectural traditions of the past. “Only reminders of former grandeur remain of many of them, but these quiet, abandoned places are threads that connect us with past generations. They are a memory of the history of the place and the culture of our ancestors, an important testament to the architecture and engineering thought of the past,” the agency said.

      Earlier it was reported that Metropolitan Georgy consecrated the restored church in the village of Kadnitsy.
