      Residents of Pavlovo in the Nizhny Novgorod region reported contamination of a river caused by sewage being discharged into it. This led to fish deaths and a stench that spread throughout the district. The issue was investigated by Kstati correspondents.

      According to local residents, about a month ago the Tarka River, which flows into the Oka, suddenly turned black, whereas before it had been clear. In addition, all wildlife left the body of water — the ducks flew away and the fish died. Residents complain of an unbearable odor that penetrates into homes. One Pavlovo resident even had a cow fall ill after drinking water from the river.

      It turned out that the cause was a rupture in the sewage system coming from the Cheremushki microdistrict. For several weeks sewage waste flowed toward the river. Local authorities were informed of this almost a month later. Work on site has begun, and water sampling will also be organized to further resolve the problem.
