Fruits infested with scale insects were imported for sale into the Nizhny Novgorod region.

      Specialists of the Rosselkhoznadzor Office for the Nizhny Novgorod Region and the Republic of Mari El recorded several violations during the import of plant products into Russia in August.

      At Chkalov International Airport, a check of the hand luggage of two passengers from Uzbekistan revealed 16 kilograms of rice, which exceeds the allowable limit. The passengers had no documents confirming the safety of the grain. Part of the rice, prohibited from import, was seized and destroyed in a special oven on the airport premises.

      In addition, two batches of fresh fruit from Uzbekistan were inspected at the Tekhnoprom temporary storage warehouse. 6.5 tonnes of plums and 8 tonnes of nectarines were found to be infested with the California scale. The insect was alive, as confirmed by laboratory tests.

      Despite this, the fruits were allowed to be sold. Under current rules, the presence of scale insects on fruit is not considered a threat to phytosanitary safety and does not prevent the import of such products into Russia.

      Earlier it was reported that 21 tonnes of Uzbek nectarines infested with the oriental fruit moth were found in the Nizhny Novgorod Region.
