Authorities began an investigation after dead fish and a foul odor were found at Kabatskoye Lake.

      Incidents: At Kabatskoye Lake in the Bogorodsky District, local residents noticed a mass die-off of fish and smelled a strong chemical odor.

      According to the local administration, calls from concerned citizens began coming in early in the morning. People complained of a sharp smell and dead fish floating across the surface of the lake.

      Representatives of the administration went to the scene. Following an inspection, they contacted the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Nizhny Novgorod Region. Specialists from the ministry arrived at the lake and took water samples for laboratory analysis.

      The incident has already been reported to Rosprirodnadzor, Rospotrebnadzor, the environmental prosecutor’s office and Rosrybolovstvo. In addition, a statement was sent to the police department to determine the cause of the pollution and identify those responsible.

      At the same time, an inspection of the drainage system and of businesses located near the lake has begun. All circumstances of the incident are currently being clarified.

      District head Alexey Korotkov is keeping the investigation under personal control.

      Residents are asked not to catch or eat fish from Kabatskoye Lake, and not to buy it from unknown sellers. Authorities said they would report the results of the investigation later.

      Earlier, a mass fish kill occurred in Smirnovsky Pond in the city of Arzamas and in the Sundovik River near Lyskovo.
