      Incidents

      In Balakhna, a local resident was found guilty of destroying another person's property through negligence, the Nizhny Novgorod Region Prosecutor's Office reported.

      The incident occurred in August 2024 at building No. 3A on Tsvetny Boulevard. The man was smoking cigarettes in bed. He was putting cigarette butts into a metal ashtray on the bedside table, after which he fell asleep with a lit cigarette. This led to a fire that spread to several residential units.

      The court found that the fire resulted from negligent handling of fire. Property in eight apartments was destroyed, with damages estimated at more than 19.5 million rubles.

      The justice of the peace of judicial precinct No. 2 of the Balakhna District found the man guilty under Article 168 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. He was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months of corrective labor with 10% of his income withheld in favor of the state.

      Earlier it was reported that an unextinguished cigarette led to the deaths of two people in Sergach.
