In the Rostov region, law enforcement agencies together with the National Guard detained a suspect in fraud who used the Russian messenger MAX to carry out his scheme. This was reported by the official representative of the Russian Interior Ministry, Irina Volk, the 360 TV channel reports.
The victim of the scammers was a resident of the Kursk region, who lost 444,000 rubles. The perpetrators, posing as representatives of government agencies, forced the woman to follow their instructions. All communication took place via the MAX messenger installed on her phone.
Police officers quickly identified an intermediary, who was detained. Work is underway to identify other members of the criminal group.
Irina Volk emphasized that the MAX messenger has enhanced protection features against cyber threats compared to foreign platforms. Thanks to this, the funds transferred by the victim were successfully blocked in the account, and the scammers were unable to use them.
According to statistics provided by the Cybercrime Department of the Russian Interior Ministry, the messengers Telegram and WhatsApp remain leaders in the number of recorded fraud cases.
Earlier it was reported that Roskomnadzor is restricting calls via Telegram and WhatsApp* to combat fraud, extortion and involvement in sabotage and terrorist activities.
