Eleven new "health schools" will begin operating in September at the N. A. Semashko Nizhny Novgorod Regional Clinical Hospital. The educational programs are intended for patients with heart failure, chronic kidney disease, rheumatological and hematological conditions, as well as for those seeking to lose excess weight.

According to the regional Ministry of Health, the launch of the schools is part of the national project "Long and Active Life." Each program includes two to five sessions and is available to patients receiving inpatient treatment at the hospital for the relevant medical indications.

The hospital's chief physician, Sergey Bogdanov, recalled that the institution had previously implemented similar educational courses for people with diabetes, hypertension, bronchial asthma, as well as for patients after a stroke and a heart attack. In addition, the hospital runs a program for those wishing to quit smoking.

According to Bogdanov, the "patient schools" not only help improve quality of life and prolong active longevity, but also become an important platform for exchanging experience and mutual support.

Program participants will receive informational materials: handouts, questionnaires, and presentations. Sessions will be conducted by the heads of the relevant departments and the hospital's leading physicians.

In addition, separate courses are planned for patients' relatives. They will be taught the basics of caring for people who have had a stroke and methods of home rehabilitation.

The national project "Long and Active Life," under which these initiatives are being implemented, started in 2025 and is a continuation of the "Healthcare" project. It covers all key areas of medical care — from primary-level services to rehabilitative treatment.

Earlier, the chief freelance specialist in medical prevention of the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Ministry of Health, Savitskaya, explained how to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
