Incidents
An investigation into a large-scale fraud case in Nizhny Novgorod, which caused damage to the state of more than 1.4 million rubles, has been completed, the press service of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the region reported.
According to investigators, three city residents, acting as an organized group, illegally obtained almost 9.7 million rubles from the regional budget under the pretext of holding a sporting event for minors. The event was not actually held.
The ringleader of the scheme was the head of a state non-profit organization. In October 2022 she applied for funding to organize a sporting event, submitting nine fake contracts to the authorities. The documents listed services for accommodation, catering, venue rental and the staging of opening and closing ceremonies. Third-party organizations and self-employed individuals were named as the contractors.
After receiving the funds, 8.1 million rubles were used to pay off previously accrued debts for real educational events. The remaining 1.46 million rubles were misappropriated by the accused and spent at their discretion.
The investigative unit of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for Nizhny Novgorod, with the participation of officers from the Economic Security and Anti-Corruption Unit, the Department for Economic Security and Anti-Corruption and the regional FSB for the Nizhny Novgorod Region, gathered evidence confirming the guilt of all three suspects — women aged 38, 46 and 52. None of them had prior convictions. The court imposed a restrictive measure banning certain actions.
To recover the damage, investigators seized the accused’s property during the investigation: three plots of land and one apartment with a total value of 9.49 million rubles.
The materials of the criminal case with an approved indictment have been sent to court. Under Article 159, Part 4 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, the women face up to 10 years in prison.
Earlier it was reported that the director and chief accountant of a municipal enterprise in Balakhna were convicted of embezzlement.
