About 15% of visitors to Russian shopping centers go there not to make purchases but to stroll. Bulat Shakirov, head of the Union of Shopping Centers, told the "360" TV channel.
Shakirov noted that the practice of visiting shopping centers for walks has existed for a long time. This is especially noticeable in the summer period, when people come to malls to shelter from the heat and simply take a walk.
Some visitors use shopping centers as a place for physical activity, simply walking through the shops and retail areas. According to Shakirov, the percentage of such visitors varies, but on average amounts to between 10% and 15% of the total number of shopping center guests.
He also emphasized that not all shopping center visitors make purchases. Recently there has been a 3–5% decline in shopping center attendance compared with the previous year. This is linked to the development of online commerce and marketplaces, which are becoming increasingly popular, especially among the younger generation. Young people prefer to shop online, while they come to malls to spend time with friends or to visit the cinema.
