From September 3, 2025, a new national standard for school uniforms will come into force in Russia, which has sparked heated discussions on social media. Particular attention was drawn to the girls' set with a jabot, which some considered too conservative for today's students. How the new uniform standard will actually work was explained by the Minister of Education of Nizhny Novgorod Region, Mikhail Puchkov, on his social media.
The minister explained that the new GOST does not introduce a single school uniform across the country and does not regulate its appearance. The document is primarily aimed at improving the quality and safety of the clothing worn by students. In particular, the standard specifies permissible values for hygroscopicity, air permeability and formaldehyde content, as well as requirements for material strength and the colorfastness of fabrics.
In addition, the document provides recommendations on fittings: it is not recommended to use bulky metal elements, hooks, rivets and other parts with protruding edges. The cut of school clothing should also ensure comfort both when standing still and when moving.
Puchkov noted that the appearance, color and style of clothing will still be determined by the schools themselves, taking into account the opinions of parents and students. At the same time, according to the new standard, school uniforms must be secular, aesthetic and must not contain symbols of informal groups or unlawful content.
The new GOST will also help parents navigate when choosing clothing for school. As the minister explained, the presence of the words "for students", "school" and the standard number on the label will mean that the product meets all requirements and is safe for children.
According to the document, items that may be considered part of the school uniform include blouses, jackets, vests, cardigans, dresses, pinafores, shirts, skirts, trousers, as well as shorts and jumpsuits. However, the specific set of clothing and its style will be determined by each school individually.
It was previously reported that the collection of school uniforms that won the best design contest was presented in Nizhny Novgorod.
