Nizhny Novgorod Region was among the top regions in terms of number of participants in the "Scientific Universe" competition.

More than 148,000 schoolchildren and students from across Russia are taking part in the third season of the science outreach project "Scientific Universe," aimed at attracting talented young people to the field of research. The competition has brought together participants from 87 federal subjects of the Russian Federation. The regions with the largest numbers of participants are Moscow and the Moscow Region, Krasnodar Krai, the Republic of Bashkortostan, Saint Petersburg and Leningrad Region, as well as Rostov, Sverdlovsk and Nizhny Novgorod Regions, Tatarstan, Crimea and Stavropol Krai. The most popular directions among participants are "Space Exploration," "Genetics and Personalized Medicine," "Science Fiction," and "Innovative Design."

Recall that the third season of the project started on July 3. By number of applications, the leading directions at the moment are "Space Exploration," "Genetics and Personalized Medicine," "Science Fiction," and "Innovative Design."

"The 'Innovative Design' track was chosen by State Corporation Rosatom for a reason — over the next 10 years nuclear power is expected to account for 25% of Russia's energy balance. That means every fourth light bulb in the country will be lit by nuclear energy. Rosatom will have to design and build about 40 power units in Russia, using information modeling technologies, artificial intelligence and other innovative developments. By choosing this track, participants will be able to try on the role not only of a scientist, but also of a builder of the future of nuclear power," noted Alexey Agafonov, Deputy General Director for Support and Development of Project Production at Atomenergoproekt JSC, head of the industry competence center "Engineering Design" of State Corporation Rosatom.

In total, nine thematic tracks are available to participants in the new season, corresponding to the directions of Russia's scientific and technological development: "Bioeconomy," "Unmanned Aerial Systems," "Genetics and Personalized Medicine," "Innovative Design," "Artificial Intelligence and Big Data," "New Materials and Chemistry," "Quanta," "Science Fiction," and "Space Exploration."

Beginning researchers compete in two age categories: high school students aged 14 and up, and university students up to 27 years old. They will take an online quiz, solve real scientific cases from partner companies — industry leaders and specialized universities — and 36 finalists will get the opportunity to work on their projects with experts from leading technology companies, collaborate with promising scientists, and make a name for themselves in the scientific community. The winners of the competition will go on a scientific trip to a cosmodrome.

"After participating in the project I became interested in quantum communications and am seriously considering applying to the National University of Science and Technology MISIS (NUST MISIS) — it is there that my scientific mentor works, the head of the scientific group 'Quantum Information Technologies' at the Russian Quantum Center, Alexey Fedorov. Now I want to continue my path in this field. I believe it is definitely worth taking part in the project because it is a real chance to get close to science, to learn things you had never even thought about before, and to visit a real cosmodrome!" shared Anna Bandel, winner of the second season of the competition in the "Digital Technologies" track.

You can join the project until August 24 inclusive. Registration is open at: nauchnayavselennaya.rf. The project final will be held in October this year in Moscow.

The project is supported by a grant from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia under the federal project "Popularization of Science and Technology" and is held within the Decade of Science and Technology (2022–2031) declared by the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin.

      Background:

"Scientific Universe" is a science outreach competition whose goal is to attract talented young people to research and development.

The organizer of the competition is the autonomous non-profit organization ANO "Sokhranim Les." The project is supported by a grant from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia for popularizers of science, one of the support measures of the federal project "Popularization of Science and Technology."
