A 14-year-old resident of Nizhny Novgorod nearly lost his arm after unsuccessful treatment abroad. This was reported by Alexey Nikonov, editor-in-chief of the MIA "Statsionar-press."
It all began with a simple fall from a small height while on vacation. At a local clinic he was diagnosed with fractures of both bones of his left forearm, but surgery was performed only on the tenth day after the injury. As a result, a purulent infection of the bone tissue developed.
When the teenager returned to Nizhny Novgorod, he was urgently hospitalized at Children's City Clinical Hospital No. 1. Doctors diagnosed osteomyelitis — a purulent inflammation of the forearm bones.
At the first stage of treatment, surgeons removed a 9-centimeter section of dead bone, cleaned the purulent focus and implanted a special antimicrobial spacer loaded with medication. They also had to reapply the Ilizarov apparatus.
The medical team then performed bone grafting. The lost section of bone was replaced with a graft taken from the patient's own fibula. In addition, the doctors osteotomized the non-healed ulna and stabilized both forearm bones with plates.
Thanks to the efforts of Nizhny Novgorod doctors, the arm was saved. The schoolboy has already been discharged home and has returned to his normal life.
Earlier it was reported that surgeons at PIMU reattached a part of a 61-year-old Nizhny Novgorod resident's arm that had been severed by a saw.
