Every second participant in tours of the United Metallurgical Company (OMK) plants in 2024 was a schoolchild or student. Young people show active interest in engineering professions and modern production, the company notes. This was told by OMK industrial tourism project manager Yulia Vireeva, of "Zavod Videl", at the strategic session of the AmberCode Amber Forum in Moscow.

According to her, last year the company launched three career-orientation routes for children and teenagers. Each of them is adapted to the visitors’ ages and the specifics of the particular plant.

At the plant in Vyksa there is a route called "All About Science. The Lunar Pipeline," which runs through the central research laboratory. Here children from the age of ten are introduced to the enterprise’s scientific activities and to the professions of engineers and designers. Thanks to this route, the share of local schoolchildren and students among tourists rose from less than 2% to one third of all guests.

At the Blagoveshchensk plant in Bashkortostan schoolchildren are offered the "Fascinating Metallurgy" route. Participants visit hot shops and laboratories, take part in quizzes and learn about the professions of metallurgists.

The Chelyabinsk plant "OMK Trubodatel" developed a tour for children from six years old based on the animated series "Zhelezyachki" (0+), created by the plant’s employees. Through the characters’ adventures children learn about the history of metallurgy, safety rules and the specifics of working in production. They are shown full-size product samples, and you can even climb into a one-and-a-half-meter tee fitting. This plant became the first industrial enterprise in the Chelyabinsk Region to join the Russian Movement of Children and Youth.

According to Yulia Vireeva, industrial tourism helps to break down stereotypes about the lack of prestige of manufacturing jobs.

"Industrial tourism helps change this stereotype, acquaints children and young people with the real situation, shows modern high-tech production, large bright shops, on the walls of which works of contemporary art are displayed," she said.

She added that the tours also help schoolchildren decide on a future profession. Employers also win: in two years of implementing the "Zavod Videl" project in Blagoveshchensk the number of young employees at the enterprise doubled.
