Incidents
Four young people aged 16–17 who suffered severe burns as a result of gasoline vapor ignition were admitted to the PIMU Burn Center.
The tragedy occurred on the evening of 8 August at 17:15 in Cheboksary. While driving, a fire broke out in the trailer of a passenger car where gasoline cans and lawn-mowing equipment were stored. Several teenagers and a 52-year-old man were also in the trailer at the time.
The driver noticed the fire and stopped. The passengers managed to get out and detach the trailer from the car, sustaining serious burns in the process.
The victims were urgently taken to the burn unit of the Republican Clinical Hospital in Cheboksary, where they received first medical aid, but during the night it was decided to transfer the injured to Nizhny Novgorod for further treatment.
As reported by the PIMU press service, anti-shock therapy continued during the medical evacuation. The patients tolerated the transport satisfactorily.
The most severely injured is a 16-year-old youth. He has first- to third-degree burns of the face, head, neck, torso and limbs covering 90% of the body surface area, of which 60% are deep burns. He also sustained first-degree airway burns and extremely severe burn shock.
The other victims have burn surface areas of 70, 60 and 23%, and also have thermal inhalation injuries and extremely severe burn shock.
All four patients are in intensive care in a medically induced coma and are connected to mechanical ventilators.
"We continue intensive therapy, fighting for the kids. We trust the professionalism of the doctors and hope for the best," commented PIMU Rector Nikolay Karyakin.
Earlier it was reported that a woman and an eight-month-old child who suffered severe burns as a result of a domestic gas explosion in Ingushetia were urgently taken to Nizhny Novgorod for treatment.
