Nizhny Novgorod State University will study an unknown gene linked to autism and intellectual disability.

      Scientists from N. I. Lobachevsky Nizhny Novgorod State University (NNSU) are beginning research on one of the little-studied genes potentially linked to the development of autism and intellectual disability. This was reported by Alexey Nikonov, editor-in-chief of the “Stacionar-Press” news agency. The project will be led by senior researcher Elena Kondakova of the Laboratory of Brain Development Genetics at NNSU’s Research Institute of Neurosciences. The study became possible thanks to a victory in the scientific grants competition of the “Idea” center. Using molecular-genetic technologies, specialists intend to create experimental models with disrupted expression of a gene from the Rbm family. According to the scientists, mutations in this gene may influence the formation of the cerebral cortex, but the precise molecular mechanisms remain unclear. The study’s results will help to gain a deeper understanding of the causes of congenital disorders of nervous system development, which could, in the long term, open the way to the creation of new methods for early diagnosis and prevention of neuropsychiatric disorders.

      In addition, the grant provides financial support for young scientists: one of Elena Kondakova’s postgraduate students will receive a monthly scholarship of 80,000 rubles. Earlier, pravda-nn.ru reported that Nizhny Novgorod scientists were able to visualize blood circulation in real time.
