Scammers tried to trick a woman in Shakhunya by pretending to replace her electricity meter.

A 66-year-old local resident contacted the duty unit of the Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the town of Shakhunya and reported unauthorized access to her personal information in an account on the State Services portal. The complainant explained that a woman called her in a messenger app, introducing herself as an employee of the housing and communal services and saying that free replacement of electric meters was being carried out under a state program. The pensioner agreed to meet the worker to replace the meter the next day at the agreed time. After obtaining her consent, the caller asked the victim to read out two codes that would arrive in messages, allegedly to prevent unauthorized access to the meter. The trusting woman complied, and some time later received a message that the access password for her personal account on the State Services portal had been successfully changed. The complainant realized she had been deceived by fraudsters and immediately went to the Multifunctional Center (MFC), where she restored access to her personal account. She was informed that unknown persons had drawn up a power of attorney in her name and were viewing her pension documents. Upon learning this, the woman reported the matter to the police. The investigative department of the Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the town of Shakhunya has opened a criminal case under Part 1 of Article 272 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (unauthorized access to computer information). The penalty under this article provides for a maximum punishment of imprisonment for up to 2 years. Police officers are conducting a range of operational-search measures aimed at identifying and detaining the suspects. Dear citizens! Be vigilant! Police officers remind you that you should not disclose confirmation codes for transactions from SMS messages sent by banks, mobile operators, or the Gosuslugi portal to anyone. Do not follow instructions received from telephone callers or during messenger conversations with strangers. If you have become a victim of illegal acts or fraudulent schemes, immediately contact the internal affairs authorities or call the police at 02 or 102 (from a mobile phone).
