A new bike lane with a sidewalk will connect Dargomyzhsky and Oktyabrskaya Revolyutsiya Streets in Nizhny Novgorod. This was announced by the city head, Yuriy Shalabaev, on his social media page. According to the mayor, work on developing the bike lane network in Nizhny Novgorod is ongoing. “Currently, its total length exceeds 100 km. Active work is being carried out on a section over a kilometer long from Dargomyzhsky Street to Oktyabrskaya Revolyutsiya, where specialists are not only constructing a new bike lane but also restoring the sidewalks — this is how we work, comprehensively. The completion of the repairs is scheduled for autumn,” the city head explained.
Experts from MBU "Nizhegorodgrazhdanproekt" clarified that the development of the bike lane network is being carried out systematically. “The task set by city head Yuriy Vladimirovich Shalabaev is to create a unified, continuous bike lane network in the city, dividing bicycle and pedestrian flows for comfortable movement for both. For this, along Lenina Avenue, we decided to place a bike lane on the roadway of the overpass crossing Komsomolskoe Highway, using protective barriers ‘New Jersey’ for the first time. These will allow us to designate an exclusive passage for cyclists and avoid conflicts among all road users,” said Kseniya Mazina, deputy director of MBU "Nizhegorodgrazhdanproekt."
According to officials from MKU "GUMMiD," the section from Dargomyzhsky Street to Oktyabrskaya Revolyutsiya Street currently has the existing surface dismantled and a layer of crushed stone laid. “Next, we will proceed with asphalt laying for the bike lane while also installing sidewalk tiles,” explained Dmitry Terehin, lead engineer of the auto road repair department of MKU "GUMMiD."
Nizhny Novgorod cyclists are already planning new routes. “Dedicated bike lanes make city movement safe for cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers. It’s very useful. And through traffic on Lenina Avenue will connect different city streets. When Nizhny Novgorod residents see such modern infrastructure being created, they start to think about cycling, as it is often more convenient and faster than using a car,” shared local Valery Smirnov. “Previously, there was a broken sidewalk here, which was inconvenient for both cyclists and pedestrians. We had to detour around potholes on the road, which is unsafe. It’s great that everything is being done comprehensively: sidewalk repairs and new bike lanes. It will be convenient and safe for everyone,” said cyclist Artem Bratov.
