More than 300,000 new history textbooks for grades 5-9 have been purchased for schools in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
Starting September 2025, students in grades 5-9 of the Nizhny Novgorod region will begin studying with new textbooks on "Universal History" and "History of Russia." As previously noted by the Russian Minister of Education and Science, Sergey Kravtsov, during a meeting attended by President Vladimir Putin and editors of the state history textbooks for grades 5-11 and institutions of secondary vocational education, "the imbalance caused by the existence of 54 different history textbooks has been eliminated." "A unified program in history has been implemented in all schools, developed by leading specialists. Thirty percent of the time is allocated to the history of the Great Patriotic War, with specific lessons on the Battle of Stalingrad, the Brest Fortress, and the Siege of Leningrad," clarified the head of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia. The procurement of textbooks for all schools in the Nizhny Novgorod region is carried out by the regional Ministry of Education and Science. As of August 1, 2025, the new textbooks have been fully purchased and are currently being delivered to educational institutions. In total, more than 311,000 textbooks have been acquired. The cost of one copy is approximately 200 rubles. "The new textbooks are created in accordance with the modern requirements of the Federal State Educational Standard of Basic General Education and the Federal Educational Program. They provide a detailed overview of key events in universal and national history. The questions and tasks included in the textbooks will help students prepare for intermediate and final assessments. Special attention is given to materials about society's spiritual life, culture, and everyday life," noted Mikhail Puchkov, Minister of Education and Science of the Nizhny Novgorod region. The evaluation of the new textbooks was conducted by experts from the Nizhny Novgorod Institute for Educational Development and a team of local teachers. "I evaluate the unified textbooks positively, especially the section on the Great Patriotic War. Well-written, detailed, and lively, with many facts about heroes and recommended resources," shared Vladislav Shablov, a history teacher at the Nizhny Novgorod Cadet School named after Hero of Russia I. V. Gurov. As reminded by the regional Ministry of Education, last year, textbooks on history for grades 10-11 were purchased—more than 38,000 copies of "History of Russia" and over 27,000 copies of "Universal History," authored by V. R. Medinsky. The ministry emphasized that creating opportunities for children to receive quality education in comfortable conditions remains a priority task of the national project "Youth and Children." This new national project is implemented at the instruction of the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, starting from 2025. It addresses tasks previously outlined in the national projects "Education" and "Science and Universities" and includes nine federal projects and programs: "Russia — Land of Opportunities," "We Are Together," "Russia in the World," "The Best for Children," "Leading Schools," "Teachers and Mentors," "Creating a Network of Modern Campuses," "Universities for the Generation of Leaders," and "Professionalism."
